LiLY’s 2016 initiative, West Harlem Neighbors, is modeled on its Morningside Village program, with vetted and trained volunteers helping neighborhood elders to remain comfortably in their own homes as they age.
West Harlem Neighbors serves elders, free of charge, who reside in Manhattan between Riverside Drive and Convent Avenue, from W. 123 rd Street to W. 135 th Street. And, volunteers, for the most part, live within this zone.
To expand connections that seniors have, West Harlem Neighbors offers opportunities for elders to socialize and enjoy activities, such as music making. Volunteers help with practical household matters, like using a cell phone or finding room to store a wheelchair. They also pay friendly visits, take an elder on wanted walk outside, escort them on errands, and, through the West Harlem Neighbors social worker, connect elders to needed services.
West Harlem Neighbors also creates partnerships that expand its resources.
