THE COMPOSTING STORY from the NYC Dept. of Sanitation
Curbside compost collection is a priority for our city because compostable material, i.e., food wastes, comprises a third of the million pounds of trash that New Yorkers generate each day, Without composting, they release poisonous gasses into the atmosphere. like methane. But, as fertilizer, food trash releases very little into the air we breathe, But, note, the Dept. of Sanitation won’t fully roll out curbside composting until October 2024. In the meantime, there are a few “smart bins” that are located (see above) that are located locally. One is near Columbia Univ. at Broadway & W. 112th St. To unlock them, for now, there is a free “app” that you use through your smart phone. To the right, see your neighbor, Barbara Trelstad, on her way to the compost bin. She is in the vanguard helping to improve NYC air quality.
